This World War I Biplane pin badge is made from lead-free pewter and is supplied on a pin with separate clasp. Biplanes were initially used for reconnaissance before being armed. The pin badge is mounted on an information card that has a colour image of British troops, an aircraft and a tank together with a red poppy on the front and has historical information about World War I trench warfare on the reverse.

Information: During world War I thousands of miles of parallel trenches were dug along the western front. Trench warfare was necessary because the power, speed and accuracy of the weapons on both sides would have made it impossible to fight a battle in the open. Various new weapons were introduced including hand grenades, poison gas, trench mortars, tanks and artillery barrages. These weapons caused the losses of millions of lives in the most bloody war the world has ever seen.

This Hawker Hurricane pin badge is made from lead-free pewter and is supplied on a pin with separate clasp. The pin badge is mounted on an information card that has an image of a Hurricane on the front and has information about the Hurricane on the reverse.

Information: The Hawker Hurricane is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used in World War II which was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. It was armed with 4 x 20mm Hispano Mk II cannons and could carry a total of around 500 lbs in bombs. It had a top speed of 340 mph and a range of around 600 miles.

This plane played a vital role during the Battle of Britain (10 July – 31 October 1940) where it accounted for c. 656 German aircraft shot down.

The only Victoria Cross awarded for Bravery during the Battle of Britain was given to Flt Lt J.B Nicholson flying a Hurricane from 249 Squadron.
