During World War II a farthing would have bought one whole weeks worth of rationed dried egg.

Blitz was the name given during World War II (1939-45) to the German attempt to force the United Kingdom to surrender by bombing its chief cities. The Blitz began on September 7th, 1940 with a heavy daylight raid on London followed by a night raid. On December 28th, 1940 the German air force (Luftwaffe), dropped 22,000 fire bombs on London, transforming large parts of the city into a huge inferno. Amongst those cities worst hit was Coventry, which was badly damaged during a single raid in November 1940. London was raided every night from September 7th to November 2nd. The last big raid on London was on May 10th, 1941 when the House of Commons was gutted.

More than 43,000 men, women and children throughout Britain were killed in the Blitz or died from injuries received during it.
